Is It All in the Wording?

Have you ever noticed that British people sound SO wonderful when they speak? And the terms and words they use for things make life sound so much more interesting and colorful?

We've been enjoying Downton Abbey (Like half of the rest of the planet) and the whole time we watch each episode, we find ourselves saying, "Don't you just LOVE the way they talk?"

It makes us "Americans" sound so....so....well, "drab".

I got to thinking about this and I'm convinced that it's true...that the words we use and the way they are spoken make or break the "atmosphere" of what we're talking about...it all sounds so much more inviting, romantic, and scenic, when presented in the British tongue!

For instance, I can pick up my local newspaper and say to my husband, "Oh look, there's an apartment for rent in Hancock." Or...."Hey...that little apartment has gone up for rent again".

Sound exciting? Not really.

But the Brits say things like "Flats to rent  Glasgow", "Flats to rent  Edinburgh", or "Flats to rent  Aberdeen" and it makes me want to put up a for sale sign in my OWN front yard, pack up my homeschooling family, and sail across the Wide Blue Yonder in a super-sonic jet plane just to rent one so that I can say I live there! LOL Even better, if you say these things out loud in the British accent...now you've REALLY got me hooked!

No matter what they are talking about...could be something insignificant and mundane...like "Oh, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch again today"...they sound intelligent, well-read, well-spoken, and interesting! I'm hanging on every word, waiting for the next one...even if they are speaking twaddle!
So, is it just me? Or, do you get all dreamy-eyed and adventurous when you hear the British speak?

Hey, Judy~

I absolutely LOVE the British. Our new associate pastor and his family are from England and I will ask questions, just so I can hear them speak! lol

Blessings~

I, too, have always loved a British accent...incl. Scottish & Irish. In college, I studied music in Hungary for four months. There were 34 of us representing 19 different countries...lots of beautiful accents surrounded me (Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, etc). I always got a kick out of the British ones going to "hire" a bike for a day trip.

GHF ~ That is SO funny...I can just picture you following your new pastor and asking things about the weather! LOL

Munchesmom..."hire" a bike, eh? Now, that's a new one on me! Love it!
