During the Christmas season, our family enjoys the tradition of making peanut brittle.
Years back, I found a recipe that was easy to follow and the resulting candy treat was YUMMY.
Do you have any "treats" that you ONLY make during a certain time of year? It seems to make it all the more special; don't you think? At least for me, when we have something all the time, it becomes rather "usual".
When I know that I will have to wait a whole year before I have our treat again...it makes it extra special.
We love to give our peanut brittle as gifts.
My kids keep begging me to start an online "peanut brittle" business. "Sell it, Mom! It's SOOOO good! People would LOVE to buy it!"
I must admit, when I see peanut brittle selling for 8 0z @ $15.00, the thought crosses my mind that perhaps I should give it a try.
I'm sure there must be some sort of health/food laws about such things.
Do any of the Friends of Benmakesten own a business where food is sold online? If so, fill us in! Tell us what's involved and if there's a complicated amount of red tape to deal with when taking on something like this.
For now, until I learn more, I think I'll just keep enjoying making our special peanut brittle for our family and friends during the holidays.
However, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to spread it out over a few OTHER holidays, besides Christmas, right?
THEN, I wouldn't have to wait a WHOLE entire year for it's YUMMINESS.
Hey! St.Valentine's Day is coming up soon! That sounds like a good excuse for making homemade treats to me!

I have my grandmother's recipe for "Easy Fudge" that I make every year for Christmas (except this past year, I didn't make it until our Epiphany party). It has crunchy peanut butter, butterscotch chips, & marshmallows in it & is easy to make (hence the name!) DH & the munchkins LOVE it!
I must have missed this post! But in perusing your blog I just found it.
Last holiday season (well, now it's actually 2 seasons ago - 2010) I worked briefly in a candy kitchen for a company that made brittle and other yummy goodies. The owner, too, started out in her home kitchen, making for friends and family, and, upon much encouragement, perfected her recipes and expanded her list of products and eventually - 7 years later - came to be what she is now which is a pretty large business that has moved to wholesale and has very many high-class clients. It's a pretty well known company up here and her most popular product was featured on Rachel Ray's show as the snack of the day a # of years ago, as well as in Woman's Day mag (I think it was that one) the year I was working there. I can tell you that I'm pretty sure that for any food-related business, you have to have your kitchen licensed as a commercial kitchen (or rent/lease/own one that is) and there is much to do about quality control, etc. Inspections and all of that as well, I'm sure.. I remember there being certain criteria that had to be followed just to wash the dishes at the new commercial kitchen they had just moved into when I started there.
But the price you can charge, people are WILLING to pay for good brittle!!! Especially around the holidays! I say think about it! Plan for it! ANYTHING is possible! (Including making it and selling it in our shop when we have one!)
